Smokey Bear Gets a Friend

Americans have grown up with Smokey Bear’s important fire prevention message for nearly a century. In 1971, a year after the first Earth Day, the US Forest Service created a friend for Smokey Bear: wise and clever Woodsy Owl. Outfitted in a Robin Hood-style hat, Woodsy Owl educates Americans on the importance of protecting our land.

Woodsy’s PSAs

Over the years, Woodsy Owl's impact has extended beyond the US Forest Service and environmental advocates. He has appeared in dozens of public service videos that have become part of pop culture and Americana.

The first Woodsy Owl public service spot was created by Chuck Williams, a U.S. Forest Ranger who was also the Forest Service's technical consultant for the classic TV show Lassie. With its catchy jingle and memorable message, this video played a significant role in spreading Woodsy's message.

Lend a Hand

In 1997, the Forest Service teamed up with the Children's Television Workshop to give Woodsy a fresh look and a new message. With his new hiking boots and backpack, the revitalized Woodsy still urges us to “give a hoot– don’t pollute,” as he inspires a new generation to also “Lend a hand! Care for the land!” 

The best way to care for the land is to practice Woodsy’s Four R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot (compost). Most of us are familiar with the importance of recycling, but Woodsy’s message to compost is a reminder to regenerate the land for future generations to enjoy.

Don’t let Woodsy’s birthday fly by without celebrating our beautiful land and the “Anti-Pollution Owl” who inspires us to preserve it. In honor of Woodsy, get outside and enjoy our beautiful public lands. Just be sure to “Leave a trail that’s nice and clean!”
