How to Find Volunteer Events at Your Local & National Parks

Volunteerism
There’s something deeply rewarding about giving back to the places you love. Volunteering at a national park or forest is a great way to do just that. After all, the best way to enjoy a park is by being a part of it!

Landmark Volunteers at Moab Spring Spruce Up
2025 Moab Spring Spruce Up
On April 11th, The Landmark Project headed to Moab National Park for the annual Spring Spruce Up. Over the last three years, volunteers from across the country have come together to help preserve the park’s stunning landscapes. From trail cleanup to habitat restoration projects, Moab’s Spring Spruce Up is a chance to give back to the Moab community and trails that welcome thousands of visitors each year.
After volunteering at the 2024 Spruce Up and seeing all that the volunteers accomplished, The Landmark Project was excited to sponsor this year’s event. Led by the regional land trust, Utah Open Lands, our team completed multiple projects across the park.
Projects ranged from supporting native plant growth by spreading seeds and building protective rock barriers to scouting the area for hazards, such as DIY fire rings and dangerous trails created by visitors. We even spruced up an old pit toilet so it’s ready for a new season of hikers and campers.

The most memorable part of the weekend was working alongside hundreds of volunteers passionate about maintaining Moab and parks across the country. It was awesome to see how much the event has grown since it started in 2023 – from a handful of volunteers to more than a hundred people from across the country!
"We loved seeing what Moab Trail Mix was able to accomplish when attending their Spring Spruce Up in 2024, and we wanted to be a part of the event again!"

If you’re unsure how to get started, here are our favorite ways to find park events and volunteer opportunities nationwide.
Visit the National Park Service (NPS) Website
The National Park Service website has multiple pages dedicated to volunteer opportunities. To get involved:
Check the Events Calendar for events happening at national parks in all fifty states.
Use the ' Find a Park ' page to search for opportunities at parks near you.
Review dozens of long-term and short-term Special Volunteer Programs.

Search Volunteer.gov
Volunteer.gov is a centralized platform used by federal agencies, including the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management. You can search by state, city, and date for events in your area.
Follow Your Local Park’s Social Media
Many national parks and forests have Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter accounts where they post about upcoming events. Following your favorite parks can give you first notice of:
Clean-up days
Upcoming trail maintenance or restoration
National Public Lands Day activities

"Meeting/getting to know the amazing people that make the event happen made it especially fun!"
Connect With Park Foundations
Most parks have a "Friends of" group or partner organization that plans events, raises funds, and hosts volunteer opportunities. These groups are one of the best ways to keep our national parks and landmarks beautiful for future generations. Some popular groups are:
Friends of Acadia
Grand Canyon Conservancy
Yosemite Conservancy
We have been supporting our local Friends of the Reedy River conservation partners for many years. From donations to river clean up events, we love to get our boots on the ground with our team in the local community as well. On April 12th, lots of members from our crew helped remove over 8,000 pounds of litter from our waterways!

Watch for Annual Clean-Up Events on Holidays
Park events often coincide with holidays. These holiday events involve trail maintenance, litter removal, and educational sessions. Some popular holidays for events are:
- Earth Day (April 22)
- National Trails Day (early June)
- National Public Lands Day (late September)
Whether you're a weekend warrior or looking to get involved long-term, there are countless ways to give back to the public lands you love.
