Camp Cook Guide - Campfire Pizza

Campfire Pizza

Few things compare to Friday night around the campfire out in the wilderness. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect start to the weekend. Unless, of course, you could also enjoy a slice of fresh pizza under the stars.

With our easy campfire pizza recipe, you can bite into your favorite pizza and finish your night with s’mores and campfire stories.

Equipment

  • Cast iron skillet or pan (10” or 12”) with a lid
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Fork for stirring
  • Heat-proof tongs
  • Camp stove or roaring campfire

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups of all-purpose flour (King Arthur or  Bob’s Redmill works especially well)*
  • One packet of rapid-rise yeast
  • Two teaspoons of salt
  • One cup of warm water
  • Four tablespoons olive oil, divided

*This recipe makes two pizza crusts.

Preparation

  • Combine the flour, yeast, and salt in a mixing bowl.
  •  Add two tablespoons of the oil and the warm water to the dry ingredients. Mix this with a fork and your hands until dough begins to form.
  • Knead the dough for a minute until the ingredients come together and it has a smooth, stretchy texture.
  • Cover the dough and allow it to rise for 20 minutes.
  • Once the dough has risen, divide it into two equally sized pieces.
  • Add two tablespoons of oil into a preheated 10" or 12" cast iron skillet and swirl to coat the skillet surface and sides.
  • Put one of the dough halves in the skillet, and use your hands to press the dough to the skillet edges.
  • Place the skillet on a grate over your campfire or stove at high heat. Cook for about 5 minutes. Around the 3-minute mark, check the bottom of the dough. Once it’s golden brown, it’s ready to be flipped.
  • Flip the crust with a pair of tongs to cook the other side.
  • Add your favorite toppings to the cooked side of the crust and cover the pizza with a cast iron lid or a sheet of foil. (Depending on the heat of your campfire, you may need to remove the skillet from the grate for this step.)
  • Cook the pizza for approximately 5 minutes more until the crust is golden brown and your cheese (if using) is melted. If your toppings create steam, you may want to cook your pizza for another minute or two with the lid off.
  •  Remove your pizza from the skillet, slice, and savor every campsite bite!
