Anja Jane Artist Feature
Landmark Presents exists to amplify artists whose work encourages inclusivity and stewardship of our public lands.
Anja Jane is a digital painter who lives on the "idyllic" Bowen Island in British Columbia. One cool way she pledges her commitment to nature is by planting a tree for every print purchased on her website.
Is art a side hustle or hobby for you, or is it your day job?
It's my day job! I trained as a printed textile designer and did that for many years before evolving my business into how it looks now. I've always loved doing different things and challenging myself. I had a gallery space /coffee shop in London too, so I'm constantly evolving the way I create.
Are you currently working on any cool projects?
I am embarking on a new project! My passion is permaculture and the environment. I have become a steward of some land on a beautiful island in British Columbia. Here I'm creating a space that will someday inspire others to lead a more sustainable harmonious life, where I can share all the tools I have learnt throughout my life that help me live a wild, creative joyful life.
And for another one, I'll need to be a bit cryptic as it's not been released yet. . . . It has to do with Greek warriors and it's been a lot of fun to work on! Big moustaches, amazing hats, and great textiles!
Where does your passion for art and the environment come from?
Being in nature makes me so happy and peaceful. I can't imagine a life without it and I will do anything in my power to protect it.
What's something you've done that you're really proud of?
Following my dreams. Not being scared to make big changes in my life to step into my power.
What’s your all time favorite outdoor space and why?
Bowen island. It's an idyllic magical island of waterfalls, forests, and wildlife that sits in the middle of a fjord with breathtaking views of coastal mountains and islands. It nurtures community and friendliness, attracting artists and an eclectic mix of alternative thinkers and free spirited people. It's been my dream to live here for many years and now I'm here after a long journey and I couldn't be more grateful.
Are you involved in any form of advocacy or giveback?
For every art print I sell on my website I plant a tree. The "Endangered Species" print (left) is extra special - when I sell 10 on my website I donate one to a school in British Columbia. I'm hoping to inspire young conservationists through this art piece. Each print comes with a PDF with actionable fun things people can do for an animal or plant that resonates with them!
The Deck of Wander playing cards was about inspiring people to hike and get out of their comfort zone through the trails I love. I feel when people are in nature it makes us connected to Mother Nature. When we are connected it creates a passion to conserve her.
