America's Environmental Education Ambassador

Woodsy Owl was introduced by the U.S. Forest Service in 1971 to inspire people to care for forests, parks, wildlife, and public lands. While Smokey Bear focuses on wildfire prevention, Woodsy Owl encourages everyday stewardship—protecting nature through simple actions that help preserve the outdoors for everyone.

His familiar slogan, "Lend a Hand—Care for the Land," reminds us that every visit outdoors is an opportunity to make a positive impact.

Small Actions Make a Big Difference

Healthy forests, clean rivers, thriving wildlife, and beautiful parks all depend on people making thoughtful choices. Whether packing out trash, staying on designated trails, respecting wildlife, or caring for public lands, responsible recreation helps ensure these places remain healthy for future generations. Woodsy Owl's message is just as relevant today as it was more than fifty years ago.
